KEYNOTE ADDRESS

THE ANCIENT ART OF "STOIC JOY"
by Ken Hoyle,OALA, FCSLA, CAHP

The dictionary definition of a Stoic is one who practices repression of emotion, indifference to pleasure and pain and endurance in adversity. This address based on W.B. Irvine's book A Guide to the Good Life will show how today's understanding of Stoicism differs from the ancient view. Today Stoics use psychological techniques to bring joy and tranquility to their lives. In exploring stoicism for contemporary living we will also address the difficult issues of anger and dying.

Ken Hoyle recently discovered the benefits of a stoic philosophy of life. He is a landscape architect living a joyous and tranquil life in Cambridge Ontario with his life partner Karen Cummings and their dog Maple.
