Multifaith Spiritual Dialogue Circle – This Circle encourages a culture of encounter and welcomes all people of goodwill, of faith and no faith, to examine themes that expand our consciousness and our connection. On the first Monday of September to June from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, participants gather to share their experience of the month’s topic. Don Heights has been hosting this monthly reflection group since it began in 2009.
Bid Euchre Club – This is a card playing group organized by a Don Heights member and some avid card players. They get together on Monday evenings at 6:45 pm to play euchre and to share coffee, cookies and friendship. New members are welcome to join the group and existing members are welcome to attend other events at Don Heights. We appreciate the Bid Euchre player donations of money, work and food to our Out of the Cold weekend at Knox United Church.
DoBeDo Work Group – This group, which is open to everyone who likes to work and socialize, meets once a month on the last Tuesday morning of the month from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm to do the many things at 18 Wynford that keep our space organized and clean and tidy. The name for this group was inspired by Chris White’s song about doing and being. We perform such tasks as kitchen clean-up, paper shredding, plant watering, archive filing, decorating for Christmas, knitting caring shawls and much more. After the work is finished we often share a light lunch and conversation.
Don Heights Singers – Everyone is welcome to join music director, Sheila White, and the Don Heights Singers at 7:00 pm each Tuesday. The singers prepare the music for each of the Unitarian Speaker Sundays and learn and practice old and new Unitarian songs.
Meditation Practice Group – This small group of 6 to 8 people meets on Tuesdays at 11:00 am for meditation followed by a shared lunch. We will continue to use the wisdom of Pema Chodron to guide us on our journeys. Gert Montgomery is the organizer of this group. New members are welcome. If the group becomes too large, we will help support the development of a second meditation group.
UU A to Z – John Sproule hosts a series of PowerPoint lectures about interesting historical UU personalities. UU A to Z is offered as an evening program beginning at 7:00 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month. John has always referred to this as a “26-year project”… but now that he is retired, the talks will be monthly and should finish in two or three years.
SAC Don Heights Regional Writers Group – This is an open group for song writers in Toronto to collaborate and practice their song writing skills. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Festival Theatre Nights – Ron Weigand organizes monthly movie nights on the second Thursday of the month. Ron is sensitive to his fellow movie buffs who enjoy movies with closed captions and will continue to seek out movies that are “off the beaten path”. Some attendees meet for dinner at a local restaurant at 5:00 pm before meeting at Don Heights for the movie at 6:45 pm followed by coffee and dessert.
Wine, Women and Spirituality – On the last Friday of the month around 7:00 pm, the women of Don Heights are invited to meet at each other’s homes to relax and talk and laugh and get to know each other. The name of this group was inspired by a book called The Spirituality of Wine by Tom Harpur. We have no set agenda for our group other than to take a break from solving problems, may they be personal, Don Heights or universal. Monthly locations are listed in the Bulletin calendar. The monthly host provides a snack and a beverage and others add to the refreshments.
Family Games Night – This is a night for people of all ages (10 – 110) to enjoy board and card games together. Don Heights has a good supply of favourite board games but you are also welcome to bring along your own favourites. Games Night is organized by John Sproule and Michael Kenny from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm on the third Friday of the month.
Coffeehouse and Open Mic – Don Heights provides a relaxed venue for local performers to practice their musical talent. Each month, on the second Saturday, we have a main act followed by an open mic for anyone who wants to contribute a performance piece and then the main act closes the evening. Charge for the evening is $5 per person or $8 per family. Watch our Bulletin for information about the featured musician. Doors open at 7:15 pm.
Don Heights Art Show – Acknowledging the many artistic talents of Don Heighters and friends, Sharyn Devine organizes an annual spring show of original art works. This year the opening Sharing our Art event will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm featuring an opportunity to have a preview of the show and to meet the artists while enjoying snacks and beverages. Artists who would like to be a part of this show should contact Sharyn early in the new year. We enjoy the artwork for several weeks following the opening at Don Heights.
Truth and Reconciliation – As part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation we are hosting a series of different programs and welcoming various speakers to discuss indigenous issues. Please see our calendar for up-to-date information.
Long Strange Trip – A six-part series of documentaries about the History of Unitarian Univeralism has been created by hobby historian and retired electrical engineer Ron Cordes from Bedford, Mass. We will show these one hour videos followed by discussion on Sunday afternoons at 12:30 pm. Please invite a friend.
Planning Your Own Memorial Service – Once again Judy Newman has planned a workshop for us on a Sunday afternoon. Please let the office know if you would like to attend. Past participants have said they don’t feel they are finished with this task and would like more opportunities for discussion and ideas. Some people have also indicated an interest in learning more about natural burials.
Starch Solution PotLuck Lunch – This is a self-care opportunity organized by member Judy Newman for the 3rd Sunday of each month. These lunches are based on the principles of Dr. John McDougall’s book The Starch Solution: Eat the Foods You Love, Regain Your Health, and Lose the Weight for Good. See Dr. McDougall’s website, https://www.drmcdougall.com/, for recipes. Please bring a copy of your recipe or a list of ingredients. Everyone is welcome to join in these great lunches.
